NSW Fair Trading recently commenced its annual pre-Christmas toy safety checks targeting suburbs and towns across the State.
Discount stores and ‘pop-up kiosk’ traders will be a focus with inspections continuing for several weeks.
Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe said kiosk traders tend to be direct importers, securing their products via the internet.
“They generally do not have an established quality assurance system and at times they will sell banned and non-compliant toys,” he said.
A trader education program held in May in the Sydney area targeted a range of small businesses selling toys to help them improve compliance.
“Toy safety is paramount and every year we provide a list of dangerous toys detected in our campaign to help consumers ensure they have not inadvertently purchased an unapproved product,” Mr Stowe said.
