Australian retail honours its legends and rising stars

August 24, 2018

The Australian retail industry has honoured its long-standing legends and recognised its innovative rising stars in a glittering awards ceremony in Melbourne overnight.

The nation’s premier industry honours – the National Retail Awards – were presented to outstanding retailers from across Australia at a glittering ceremony in the spectacular Myer Mural Hall in Melbourne.

From long-standing industry leaders such as Target and Freedom, to emerging players such as Perfect Potion and Simply for Strings, the evening highlighted the nimble and innovative approaches being taken to advance retail businesses.

NRA Chief Executive Officer Dominique Lamb said the strong field of competitors for the awards showed the depth of talent in Australian retail, and the number of people striving constantly to offer their customers the best possible shopping experience.

“We’ve seen an exceptional display of talent at the awards tonight, ranging from our Young Retailer of the Year Nick Pearce through to our Lifetime Achiever Mary Booth, and every award winner in every category.

“What it shows is that retail offers opportunities for everyone. We’ve had winners tonight who are just starting out in business, and those who have devoted their lives to the industry.

“Retail is one of Australia’s largest employers, and increasingly is offering life-long career options for young Australians.”

In accepting her Lifetime Achievement Award, Ms Booth shared the story of a career devoted to retail, and how it led her to establish her Wine Glass Gallery business.

“People used to say to me ‘why would you want to work in retail?’. Well, why would you want to work anywhere else?” Ms Booth told the awards audience.

More than 300 people attended the gala dinner.
